Doing a little Elf work for Christmas. Custom made Wooden play stands. Creative play for little kids. They put cloth over them to make forts and what ever else their imagination can dream. Tom, i'm currently building these as well, similar in fact. however, i can't see i your pic how you joined the top bar, it passes through the hole in the sides..but is just glued at the contact or what?

DeleteIts mostly a tight friction fit. I also put a 18ga. pin from either side (one top one bottom) to keep in there permanently. Because the bottom shelf and support are securely fastened as well it's never a problem for them to come apart. Even with the heavy use of a creative kid :-)
